Mondo Tampanensis Truffles are fresh Psilocybe tampanensis sclerotia, known within the mycological community as the Philosopher's Stone. Within the Mondo catalogue, they sit in the medium-high range of alkaloid potency, above the Pajaritos and Mexicana, but without reaching the level of the Atlantis or Utopia. What distinguishes them is not only their concentration of active compounds, but the profile that researchers and collectors consistently attribute to them: markedly contemplative and introspective, as opposed to the more social or visual character of other varieties of the same range.
It has been reported that Tampanensis sclerotia present a characteristic nutty aroma with a slight acidic nuance, considered one of the most distinctive organoleptic profiles within Mondo's fresh sclerotia range.
Psilocybe tampanensis occupies a singular place in the history of modern mycology. It was discovered by mycologist Steven Pollock in Tampa, Florida, in 1977, during the second International Mycological Congress. Since then, it has hardly ever been found again in the wild: over more than four decades of searching, documented records of wild specimens are practically non-existent. Pollock cloned the original specimen, and a year later Paul Stamets succeeded in cultivating its sclerotia, a milestone that marked the beginning of psychoactive truffle production under controlled conditions. Practically all Tampanensis specimens available on the market today descend from that single specimen found in Florida.
