Mushroom plug spawn
Mycelium plugs, also called myceliated dowels, are small pieces of wood colonized by mushroom mycelium. They are used as a starting point to inoculate logs or stumps of non-resinous woods, facilitating the cultivation of different edible mushroom species. This format makes the plugs one of the simplest and most effective ways to transfer mycelium to a new natural substrate.
What are mycelium plugs?
They are wooden plugs or wedges previously inoculated with a specific mushroom species. Over time, the mycelium completely colonizes the piece until it's ready to be inserted into a log. They usually have longitudinal grooves that allow better fitting when inserted into holes drilled in the wood. Under optimal conditions, the log colonization process can be completed in 6 to 8 months.

Advantages of cultivation with mycelium plugs
The use of myceliated plugs offers several benefits:
- Accessible method: ideal for both beginners and experts.
- Effectiveness: they guarantee uniform and safe wood colonization.
- Natural and sustainable: made with 100% ecological materials.
- Versatility: suitable for species like shiitake, lion's mane, reishi, maitake or oyster mushroom.
How to use mycelium plugs
For their application, it's recommended to use freshly cut logs, which act as an optimal nutritive medium for mycelium. Simply drill holes in the log, insert the mycelium plugs into them and seal with natural wax to prevent dehydration and contaminant entry. With patience and adequate conditions, the log will transform into a fertile environment capable of producing mushrooms recurrently for several years.
Mycelium plugs are, ultimately, a simple, effective and environmentally friendly tool, perfect for those who wish to experiment with edible mushroom cultivation on wood.
