Penis Envy is a strain of Psilocybe cubensis that has gained considerable notoriety within the psychedelic community, both for its unusual appearance and its extraordinary potency. Its name comes from its peculiar shape: a thick, stout stem with a smaller, sparsely spread cap, reminiscent of male genitalia. This shape is not just a visual curiosity: it is directly related to its genetic characteristics, which include low spore production and higher tissue density.
The history of Penis Envy is shrouded in mystery. It is believed that ethnobotanist Terence McKenna collected the first specimens during an expedition to the Colombian Amazon rainforest. Subsequently, mycologist Steven Pollock, known for his pioneering work in the cultivation of psilocybin fungi, reportedly selectively cultivated this strain, giving rise to the stable and potent version we know today as Penis Envy. Over the years, the strain has been further refined, giving rise to variants such as Penis Envy Uncut, Albino Penis Envy or Penis Envy #6, the latter designed for ease of cultivation and increased spore production.
What really distinguishes Penis Envy is its extremely high concentration of psilocybin and psilocin, the main active compounds in magic mushrooms. It is estimated to be up to two to three times more potent than other common varieties of Psilocybe cubensis.
Penis Envy is also known to be more difficult to cultivate than other strains of cubensis. Its spore production is very limited, which complicates its propagation by traditional methods. In addition, the fruiting cycle is slower, requiring stricter growing conditions.
The recommended temperature for its cultivation is between 22 and 24 degrees, and humidity between 60% and 80%.
